The geology: Tourmalinated Quartz is actually two minerals grown together, not a single mineral. Clear or smoky Quartz (silicon dioxide, Mohs 7) forms alongside Black Tourmaline, also called Schorl (an iron aluminum borosilicate, Mohs 7 to 7.5), most commonly in Brazilian granitic pegmatites where both minerals crystallize in the same environment. Because the tourmaline needles form independently inside each piece, no two tumbles ever show the same pattern.
