Smoky Quartz tumbles in beautiful shades of brown to nearly-black. We love these for the way the color shifts in different light - some pieces are warm cocoa brown, some have an almost translucent smoky gray, and the darkest ones look like polished tea.

Here's the geology, because it's actually fascinating: Smoky Quartz gets its color from natural irradiation deep underground, where radioactive elements in surrounding rock activate aluminum traces inside the quartz over millions of years. So this brown color is literally created by ancient earth chemistry. Pretty cool. It's been mined for centuries (the Celts in the Cairngorm Mountains of Scotland called it cairngorm and used it in jewelry), and today most natural pieces come from Brazil.

Note: a lot of cheap Smoky Quartz on the market is actually clear quartz that's been irradiated in a lab to mimic the look. Naturally irradiated stones tend to have softer color zoning rather than uniform black. Ours is the natural kind.
