The geology: Mookaite is a silicified radiolarite, formed from the fossilized silica shells of microscopic marine plankton called radiolarians that settled on an ancient seafloor roughly 100 to 145 million years ago. It's found in only one place on Earth, near Mooka Creek in Western Australia's Kennedy Ranges, no other deposit produces this material. Iron and manganese impurities create its distinctive multicolor bands. Mohs hardness 6.5 to 7.
