About the star (asterism): when you roll the sphere under a single light source - sunlight or a lamp - you'll see a six-pointed star floating across the surface. The star moves with the light. It's not painted on, it's an actual optical phenomenon caused by parallel needle-like inclusions inside the quartz reflecting light. The same effect in sapphires is called "star sapphire" and is highly prized.

The geology: Rose Quartz gets its pink color from trace amounts of titanium, iron, or manganese, and the six-pointed star comes from rutile or dumortierite needle inclusions oriented along the crystal's symmetry axes.
