The geology: Banded Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) where iron-rich layers alternate with cleaner silica layers during formation, creating the distinctive banding. It's been used by humans for thousands of years - Bronze Age artifacts from 1800 BC, Egyptian funerary jewelry, Roman signet rings (because hot wax doesn't stick to Carnelian, making it ideal for wax seals).
