Malachite slabs with that incredible swirling green banding this stone is famous for. We love these because the slab format really shows off the patterns - those concentric rings, eyes, and ribbons of light-to-dark green that look almost like topographic maps of an alien forest. Some pieces have those distinctive "eye" formations that collectors actively hunt for, where the banding forms perfect circular targets.

The geology: Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral, which is why the green is so saturated and rich - it's literally the color of oxidized copper, the same chemistry that turns the Statue of Liberty green. It forms when copper deposits weather and combine with carbon dioxide and water over geological time, often in the upper oxidized zones of copper ore deposits. Major sources include the Democratic Republic of the Congo (the world's largest source of high-quality Malachite), Russia, Mexico, and Australia.

- Mohs hardness 3.5 to 4 (much softer than quartz - handle with care)

IMPORTANT care notes for Malachite:
- Do NOT use water cleansing - Malachite is slightly soluble and can release copper into water
- Do NOT inhale Malachite dust if you ever cut or grind it (this is for lapidary workers, not buyers - the polished stone is completely safe to handle)
- Store separately from harder stones to prevent scratching
- Display in indirect light - prolonged sun can fade the deepest green tones
