The geology: Larimar is the trade name for a rare blue variety of the mineral pectolite, found in only one place on Earth, the Bahoruco mountain range near Barahona in the southwestern Dominican Republic. Its signature blue comes from trace elements within the pectolite's fibrous crystal structure, long attributed to copper, with more recent research also pointing to vanadium and iron. Mohs hardness 4.5 to 5, notably soft, so avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and extended water soaking.
