The geology: Larimar is the trade name for a rare blue variety of the mineral pectolite, found in only one place on Earth, the Bahoruco mountain range near Barahona in the southwestern Dominican Republic. Its signature blue color comes from trace elements (long attributed to copper, though recent mineralogical research also points to vanadium and iron) within the pectolite's fibrous crystal structure. Mohs hardness 4.5 to 5, notably soft, so avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and extended water soaking.
