The geology: Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar, discovered in 1770 on the coast of Labrador, Canada, though most material today comes from Madagascar. Its signature flash, called labradorescence, isn't a surface color at all, it's caused by light interfering between microscopic internal twinned layers within the crystal, similar to the way a soap bubble shows color. Mohs hardness 6 to 6.5, softer than quartz, so keep it away from harsh chemicals and prolonged direct sun, which can dull the flash over time.
