The geology: Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony colored by iron oxide impurities, ranging from pale orange to deep red-brown, with banded material showing visible zones of color from variations during formation. It's been used in jewelry since 1800 BC, and Romans famously used it for signet rings since wax doesn't stick to it. Mohs hardness 6.5 to 7.
