The geology: Amazonite is a green to blue-green variety of microcline, a potassium feldspar. For years its color was assumed to come from copper, but mineralogical studies now point to trace lead and water content within the crystal structure as the real cause, with iron possibly playing a secondary role. Despite the name, genuine deposits are not actually found along the Amazon River, the origin of that name remains a bit of a historical mystery. Mohs hardness 6 to 6.5, with two directions of perfect cleavage, so it can chip if dropped on a hard edge.
