The geology: despite the name, Moss Agate isn't technically an agate (it lacks banding) and the "moss" isn't plant material. It's a chalcedony quartz with mineral inclusions of hornblende, chlorite, or iron oxide that grew in branching, dendritic patterns inside the stone as it formed, creating that green moss-like appearance. Mohs hardness 6.5 to 7.
